Coyotes earn 4-1 opener over Dixie State

Butler leads way with three RBI, solo shot

Junior Britney Butler had three RBI including a solo homer in a 4-1 win over Dixie State.
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Good things usually happen when Britney Butler swings the bat.

The Riverside native hit a two-run double and then added a solo home run for good measure as the Coyotes won their first game of 2012 with a 4-1 opening-game victory at Dixie State in nonconference doubleheader softball Thursday.

In the second game, the Red Storm broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run fifth and earned a 5-2 victory.

CSUSB moves on to the Desert Stinger Tourney that begins Friday in Las Vegas and hosted by Montana State-Billings. The Coyotes face Western Washington at 4:30 p.m.

Trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, the Coyotes got rolling. Charlotte Galzote led off the inning with a walk, stole second, then reached third on a single by Alex Mitchell. After Brittney Ybarra struck out, Butler clubbed a two-run double to left center and the Coyotes led 2-0.

Jamie Leffingwell followed with another double that brought in Butler and CSUSB led 3-0.

Two innings later, Butler connected on her first home run of the season, a shot to left.

Butler led the day with a 2-for-3 effort. Mitchell also had two hits -- both singles.

Alyssa Flores and Felicia Cervantes each had singles for the Coyotes.

Senior RHP Courtney Wilhelms (1-1) earned the start in the opener. The Riverside native scattered five hits and just one extra-base hit. She struck out three, but walked eight for the victory.

The game was Dixie State's first of 2011. The Red Storm had lost just one home game in all of 2011 en route to a NCAA Tourney berth.

Game 2: Dixie State 5, Coyotes 2 (Box Score: Click here)

Victoria Lievanos came through with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the fifth, but DSC answered back with the three-run rally and held on for the split.

CSUSB (1-3) did not have a hit until Alyssa Flores' one-out single in the fifth. Cervantes followed with another single and two batters later, Lievanos came through.
