Cory Caruso struck out six without a walk in a nondecision as the Coyotes lost 2-1 in a nonconference game Friday at Azusa Pacific.
The Coyotes (1-1) look to win the series Saturday when they play the Cougars (2-1) at 1 p.m. at Fiscalini Field.
Caruso threw 7 innings and allowed one run. He induced nine groundouts.
APU took a 1-0 in the second. Brent Warren, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a sacrifice fly to right from Brendan Casey.
The Coyotes tied the game in the fifth.
Darren Dworak led-off with a double to left center, then scored one out later on
Matt Haney's single up the middle.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the eighth. Sammy Soyring doubled to left, then scored on Tyler Pujenter's single up the middle off freshman
Ruben Rios (0-1).
Haney went 2-for-4 with a double as the Coyotes totaled seven hits.
Mike Newell also had a pair of singles.
Colby Gurney earned the victory in relief of Jacob Cage.
