SAN BERNARINO -- Quality at-bats and supreme relief pitching by
Jeff Terzo and
Kerry Kelley were the big reasons why the Coyotes earned a 6-4 win over Sonoma State in the final game of the 4-game series Sunday at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes, now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA, travel to Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend for a road CCAA series.
The game was tied at 2-2 when the Coyotes' bats got going in the eighth inning. They sent eight men to the plate and resonded with four runs on five hits.
Senior
Darren Dworak led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and reached third on a single from
Alex Gutierrez.
Josh Herrera pushed Gutierrez on a sacrifice bunt and the Coyotes had runners at second and third with one out.
Senior
Eric Dow followed with a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4.
A pitching change brought in Glen Wallace and
Mike Newell promptly greeted him with a bunt single, then advanced on a throwing error, scoring Dow.
One out later,
Curtis Cassise singled in Newell, who reached third on a wild pitch.
Kelley (1-0) was outstanding in his three innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out five, including five of the last six outs.
Cassise, Dworak each had two hits and an RBI.
Devin Zenn had three of SSU's six hits.
In all, three Coyotes pitchers including starter
Mike Mudron (four) and middle reliever
Jeff Terzo (three) combined for 12 strikeouts.
SSU dropped to 4-6, 2-2.
