Coyotes crush SFSU, 3-1

Torline fires double-digit kills in decisive win

Senior All-American setter Camille Smith had 38 assists in the 3-1 win over SFSU.

SAN FRANCISCO
-- An opening set loss did not deter the visiting Coyotes in their CCAA match against San Francisco State.

CSUSB came right back and shut down the Gators 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-7, 25-19) and sit in first place in the CCAA.

The Coyotes won their sixth straight match and take a 9-6 overall mark and 6-1 CCAA ledger into Saturday afternoon's match against No. 22 Sonoma State. First serve is 2 p.m.

CSUSB took control on the attack, posting a .321 attack percentage on 49 kills, 3 errors in 112 attacks. Freshman Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes with 12 kills. Senior All-American setter Camille Smith had 38 assists, two service aces, 11 digs and three block assists in addition to her 5-0-6 effort on the attack.

Senior Mercedes Winchester had nine kills and four block assists, while freshmen Ashley Solis and Brenna McIntosh had eight kills apiece. McIntosh led CSUSB with five block assists. Junior Danielle Newcombe had seven kills, three service aces and 10 digs. Sophomore Arielle McCullough had a match-high 21 digs.

After losing the first set in tough fashion, CSUSB came right back to tie the match at 1-1 with an impressive .323 attack percentage in the second.

But what really stood out on this night was how the Coyotes dominated the Gators in the third set. They never trailed in the set and posted multiple runs. Leading 11-4, the Coyotes forced SFSU into three consecutive attack errors and were never threatened.

Solis had four of her eight kills in the third set as CSUSB fired .409 on the attack.

Torline had four kills in the fourth and final set and Newcombe had two service aces in the final.

SFSU, which entered play in first place in the CCAA, fell to 11-4, 6-2.
