SAN BERNARDINO
– Humboldt State delivered a wake-up call and the Coyotes' volleyball team answered loud and clear with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in CCAA play at Coussoulis Arena.

Junior outside hitter Danielle Newcombe responded with a match-high and season-best 19 kills and added 10 digs as CSUSB increased its winning streak to five consecutive and 13 in its last 14 with a 17-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-18 victory and remains on top of the CCAA race with three weeks left in the regular season.

After a stunning first-set loss in which the Coyotes were just 36 percent on sideouts (9-for-25), CSUSB got its act together for its 14th consecutive win over the Lumberjacks since HSU became a CCAA member seven seasons ago.

Senior All-American setter Camille Smith had nine kills, 27 assists, two service aces, 13 digs and three block assists for an excellent all-around evening. Sophomore Brittney Paino came off the bench with three kills, two service aces and two block assists in just two sets played.

Sophomore libero Arielle McCullough and freshman Jordan Ortega had 15 digs against the Lumberjacks now 2-20, 0-15.

Up 17-11 in the second and with Newcombe serving, the Coyotes scored five straight points and went on to tie the match.

In the third set, Paino put the Coyotes in control as they scored six straight points with her serving and added two service aces in that stretch.

The teams traded the lead twice with seven ties in the fourth until a block from senior MB Mercedes Winchester gave the Coyotes the lead for good at 13-12.

Alexa Rosendale led the Lumberjacks with 17 kills.
