LOS ANGELES -- Freshman
Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes in kills and shared the team lead in block assists as CSUSB defeated host Cal State L.A. 3-0 in CCAA volleyball Saturday night.
The victory pushed the Coyotes' record to 14-7 overall, 11-2 in the CCAA and their third consecutive win and 11th in the last 12.
Torline had 12 kills and shared the lead in block assists with senior
Mercedes Winchester in the 15-19, 25-20, 25-20 victory.
Equally impressive was senior All-American
Camille Smith, who had 29 assists, two service aces and a match-high two solo blocks.
Leading 4-3 in the opening set, CSUSB got going with a 7-0 run and never looked back.
But what impressed those in attendance was how the Coyotes battled back in the second set.
Down 20-16, CSUSB finished off the Golden Eagles with an unheard of nine consecutive points for the set winner. During that run, Torline threw down three kills and added two block assists with Winchester, who had two kills in that pivotal stretch.
CSUSB trailed 18-17 in the final set, but another run gave the Coyotes momentum for the victory.
Winchester got things going with a kill, and after an attack error, freshman
Ashley Solis and Torline added kills and CSUSB led 21-18.
A service ace from
Jordan Ortega and kills from
Brenna McIntosh and Solis got the Coyotes to 24-20 and eventually earned the win on an attack error from CSULA.
The Coyotes return to Coussoulis Arena on Friday night when they take on Cal Poly Pomona.
CSULA dropped to 9-11, 7-6.
