CARSON -- The Coyotes took control in their Friday night match against Cal State Dominguez Hills and came away with a 3-1 win over the Toros in CCAA volleyball.
CSUSB improved to 13-7 overall, 10-2 CCAA in its 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18 victory over the Toros in a match that saw the Coyotes trade the lead only once in the three sets they won.
Junior OH
Danielle Newcombe had eight kills, five service aces and nine digs for 13.5 points, while freshman
Alexandra Torline had a team-high 11 kills and freshman
Brenna McIntosh had eight kills, three aces, three digs and two block assists.
Newcombe and McIntosh dominated in the first set as each had four kills and three aces in the opening set.
Then,
Ashley Solis had four kills in the second set as the Coyotes grabbed the lead from the outset with only two lead ties.
The Coyotes were challenged in the third set as CSUDH hit .294. Tied at 13-13, the Toros worked a five-point run and did not relinquish lead.
But any hope of an Toros upset wasn't to be on this night. The fourth and decisive set as Torline,
Mercedes Winchester and
Jade Robinson all had three kills for the set and match winner.
Senior All-American
Camille Smith dealt 38 assists with nine digs, two block assists and four kills.
Jordan Ortega led the Coyotes in digs with 10.
The Coyotes complete the weekend at Cal State L.A. on Saturday. First serve is 7 p.m.
