Danielle Newcombe and
Priscilla Collings combined for 23 kills and All-American
Samantha Middleborn totaled nine blocks as the third-ranked Coyotes stepped outside of conference play and defeated host Cal Baptist 3-0 in college volleyball Wednesday night.
The match improved the Coyotes to 9-0 overall as they now prepare for this weekend's CCAA matches at home against Chico State on Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
CSUSB earned the three-set victory by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 as it shut down the Lancers, who had a .098 attack percentage (27-17-102).
Defensively, the Coyotes proved to be too much to handle. They totaled 51 digs with
Kelcie Tolan's match-high 14.
Morgan Carty added 10 and Newcombe had nine.
The Coyotes pulled away from the Lancers in the opening set. Tied at 9-9, the Coyotes ran an 8-1 run with Tolan serving five consecutive points. CBU closed to within three points late at 23-20, but Carty and Newcombe each had kills for the win.
Collings pushed the Coyotes ahead in the second set. Trailing 7-6, Collings threw down a kill and that triggered a 6-2 run and CSUSB led 13-9. It built a lead of 19-17 and pulled away with
Camille Smith serving. The All-American helped close the set and Collings had a pair of service aces late to earn the 25-18 win.
The Lancers held the lead through the first half of the third set, but CSUSB mounted a comeback and earned the sweep. Tied at 15-15, freshman Nicole Tartaglione fired up two service aces in a 5-0 run and CSUSB led 22-17.
Collings,
Megan Johnson and Carty each had kills in the final moments for the win.
Ingrid Carmona led the Lancers (7-4) with 15 kills.
