CARSON -- Freshman Brittney Paino led third-ranked Cal State San Bernardino with 14 kills and All-American Samantha Middleborn added 10 as the Coyotes defeated host Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-1 in CCAA play Saturday night.
CSUSB improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA and continued its long-time dominance over the Toros. The victory was CSUSB's 37th straight since CSUDH last defeated the Coyotes, 3-1 on Oct. 27, 1992.
The Coyotes earned their 25-13, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21 victory on the power of a .323 attack percentage. Their 60 kills were season-best and just the second time in their eight matches they played a fourth set.
A .531 attack percentage by CSUDH in the third set extended the match into a fourth set. The fourth set was tight with an 18-18 score late. But the Coyotes strung together with a quick 3-0 run, courtesy of two Paino kills and that gave the Coyotes necessary cushion for the win.
CSUSB returns to the court on Wednesday at Cal Baptist. The Coyotes will play at home this coming weekend with matches against Chico State (Friday) and CSU Stanislaus (Saturday).
MATCH NOTES: The Coyotes own an all-time record of 39-6 all-time against CSUDH and coach Kim Cherniss improved her all-time slate to 38-3 against the Toros... CSUSB has won 51 of its last 53 CCAA matches.
