Coyotes sweep CCAA preseason favorite CSU Monterey Bay

Flores hits game-winning RBI, Lee factors in both victories

LHP Cassidy Lee earned both victories in the sweep over CSU Monterey Bay.
SAN BERNARDINO -- A windy, dusty day did not deter the Cal State San Bernardino softball team in any way, shape or form as the Coyotes swept a pair of games in Friday's doubleheader over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Coyotes came back in the opener and won 6-5 on Alyssa Flores' shot off the right-field wall that scored sophomore Britney Butler. And for good measure, the Coyotes were stellar off 2010 CCAA Most Valuable Co-Pitcher of the Year Diane Ortiz with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

The Coyotes have won six straight and are now 6-2 overall and 2-0 after the CCAA season opener. The Otters fell to 2-6, 0-2

Game 1: Coyotes 6, Otters 5

A three-run home run by Brittany Alvarado gave the Otters some cushion in the second inning when they struck with their three runs on three hits.

CSUMB extended its lead to 5-0 in the third with two runs on three hits, before the Coyotes mounted their comeback.

CSUSB got three runs in the third on two hits. Jacquelyn Holtzclaw's triple to right scored Alex Mitchell, who led off the inning with a walk. Britney Butler ripped a triple  through the right side that scored Holtzclaw and Butler made it a 3-run inning when she scored on a wild pitch.

The Coyotes tacked on two runs in the fifth to tie the game. Butler hit a two-out double and scored on Flores' single. Flores advanced on the play to second and scored when the throw from the catcher reached center.

In the seventh, Butler reached base on a two-out walk and reached third on an error.

That brought up Flores, the Fontana native. She laced a shot right off the right-field wall that easily scored Butler for the walk-off victory.

LHP Cassidy Lee was outstanding in relief. She threw 4 2/3 innings in replace of starter Erica Prentice. Lee struck out four and gave up only two hits in her stint.

Game 2: Coyotes 4, Otters 2

Lee was the name of the game again, as she earned the start and earn her second victory of the day. The British Columbia native scattered six hits, struck out four and gave up two runs -- both unearned.

The Coyotes led 2-0 after two innings. Jamie Roland and Mitchell each had RBI-singles.

The Otters came back with runs in the fourth and tied it in the fifth.

But the sixth inning belonged to the Coyotes. Carly Land led off with a double and Roland followed with a single. One out later, Holtzclaw lifted a two-run single to left center and Lee took care of matters in the seventh.

With one out, the Otters' Jamie Moon and Jackie Serna reached on a single and an error, respectively. But Lee got Shae Olds to ground out to third and ended the game when Audrianna Gutierrez flew out to center.

Mitchell, Roland and Priscilla Curiel each had two hits.
