SAN BERNARDINO
-- A  one-two punch from seniors Samantha Middleborn and Priscilla Collings and a top-notch effort on the blocking front helped No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino secure its sixth straight CCAA title with a hard-fought 3-0 win over No. 23 Sonoma State on Saturday night.

The Coyotes, who improved their school-record winning streak to 24 straight, clinched the title before a crowd of 448 at Coussoulis Arena. CSUSB, now 24-0 and 19-0 in the CCAA, also gained the NCAA Tournament berth that comes with winning the CCAA title.

CSUSB has now won nine of the last 11 CCAA titles and will play in its 12th straight NCAA Tournament when it begins Nov. 17.

The reigning National Player of the Year Middleborn tied a career-high with 10 block assists and Collings led the way with 15 kills as the Coyotes earned a 25-19, 25-22, 28-26 win over the Seawolves (19-6, 16-4).

This was a night that saw the Coyotes come back in each set after SSU built leads. It also was a night that extended CSUSB's home winning streak to 58 straight and 41 consecutive CCAA home wins.

In the opener, the set was tied at 13-13 until an attack error from SSU gave the ball back to CSUSB. With Morgan Carty serving, a kill from Middleborn and a pair of attack errors gave CSUSB the lead at 16-14. The Coyotes extended the lead to as high as eight at 23-15 on a kill form Collings.

The second set saw Sonoma State hold a 22-19 lead after a bad set. That set-in motion a pair of blocks from Middleborn and junior All-American setter Camille Smith and a kill from Collings tied the set at 22-22.

SSU called timeout and after the break, Collings threw down another kill, and then teamed with Middleborn for a block. An attack error from SSU completed the second set in CSUSB's favor.

Set three featured back-and-forth play, proven by 12 ties. A kill from sophomore Danielle Newcombe brought the Coyotes to within set and match point at 24-23.

With Newcombe setting, an attack error from Collings tied the set and SSU held serve. The Seawolves moved ahead 25-24 on attack error, this time from Middleborn.

After a kill from Collings tied the set at 25, SSU earned served after another attack error from Collings, just her fourth on the night in 35 attempts.

That's when the block party came to a resounding end. Three straight blocks -- a combined effort from Megan Johnson and Smith, a solo from Collings and the set and match winner from Carty and Johnson gave the Coyotes the win.

Collings finished with a .356 attack percentage (15-4-35) and Middleborn was .368 on the night (8-1-19). Carty also had eight kills as CSUSB was 42-15-121 (.223) on the night.
