Coyotes men lose 1-0 to CS Monterey Bay in OT

Missed opportunities plague CSUSB, now 3-6 overall, 2-6 in CCAA

Marco Martinez had one shot against Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday.
SAN BERNARDINO -- Sophomore midfielder Servando Perez found a loose ball during a scramble in the box just 33 seconds before the end of the first overtime Sunday and booted it into the net to give visiting Cal State Monterey Bay a 1-0 victory over the host Coyotes.

The victory improved the Otters to 4-3-1 in the CCAA's North (4-4-1 overall), while the Coyotes slipped to 2-6 in conference play and 3-6 overall.

Key to the Otters win, however, was the goalkeeper work of 6-4 junior Cory Calder, making his first start of the season. Calder stopped a CSUSB penalty kick in the first half, then stuffed a one-on-one goal try by the Coyotes' Julian Garcia late in the overtime. Calder saved four other shots on goal in the match and intercepted numerous crossing passes while coming off his line.

The Coyotes outshot Monterey Bay 11-5 and Coyotes' GK Ron Shviro made good on the only two shots from the Otters that required his action during regulation.

The Otters picked up 19 fouls and three yellow cards with their aggressive style of play.

CSUSB hits the road for a non-conference match at Notre Dame de Namur in the Bay Area on Tuesday.
