ROHNERT PARK -- After a tightly-contested first half, Cal State San Bernardino broke the match with Sonoma State wide open with three second half goals Sunday, propelling the Coyotes to a 4-0 victory over the Seawolves in a CCAA conference women's soccer match.
Sophomore Jani Carmona scored twice while junior
Casey Hirsch and senior
Katie Liby also found the opponents net with shots. Senior
Unity Beddingfield assisted on goals by Hirsch and Liby.
The win improved the Coyotes, ranked No. 5 in the West Region, to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA with another long road trip scheduled next weekend at Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
Coyotes goalkeeper Tiffani Mallick made four saves in 71 minutes and
Jessica Mortola finished up in goal the final 19 minutes without being required to make a save.
Carmona put CSUSB up 1-0 just 2:04 into the match with an unassisted goal, a left-footed shot over the Sonoma State keeper. Hirsch made it 2-0 in the 48th minute, finishing a serve by Beddingfield while Liby knocked in a rebound of Beddingfield's shot in the 67th minute. Carmona finished the scoring in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick.
The Seawolves dropped to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes were outshot 12-11 in the match but seven of CSUSB's tries were on goal compared to just four for SSU.
"We played hard and organized for 90 minutes," said Coach
Travis Clarke. "Our zones in the back were great and Tiffany and Jessica did a good job in goal."
Clark said he was "happy with how we are doing but we fully understand this conference can turn upside down on you quickly."
