SEASIDE --- Felicia Cervantes went 3-for-6 at the plate for Cal State San Bernardino in a 1-0, 5-0 sweep at the hands of No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Coyotes (6-11, 5-5 CCAA) never did get the bats going in either game, notching just three hits in each game thanks to a pair fine performances in the circle by Diane Ortiz and Jessica Moon for the Otters (11-3, 9-1 CCAA)
The first contest was a pitchers' duel. Coyote's pitcher
Carly Land (0-5) gave up only one run on four hits. However, one run was all CSUMB needed. The Otter's sole run came in the fourth inning when Niki Ames scored all the way from first on a long double to left field by Channing Peebles.
Though the game was a low-scoring affair, the Coyotes had their chances. In the first inning, Jaquelyn Holtzclaw got a bunt single and
Priscilla Curiel walked.
Ashley Collinwood reached base on a fielder's choice, but Holtzclaw was erased at third on the play. With runners at first and second,
Felicia Cervantes singled through the left side to load the bases, Ortiz recorded a strike out to end the threat.
The Coyotes loaded the bases again in the sixth on an infield single by Cervantes, who went 2-for-3 in the opener, and walks by
Stefanie Pace and Land. Ortiz, who moved to 4-2, neutralized the Coyotes threat though by striking out pinch-hitter
Stefanie Quinn.
The Coyotes left nine runners on base. Five of those runners were left in scoring position, three of them at third base.
The nightcap was not as close. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third, Nicole Garcia drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field. Collinwood committed an error, one of three errors for the Coyotes in the game, which allowed two runs to score.
CSUMB's final two runs came on solo home runs by Cat Sampson in the fourth and Jenny Montez in the fifth.
CSUSB had a chance to avoid the shutout in the seventh inning. Cervantes knocked a one-out double to right center field. Pace then doubled to center and Cervantes tried to stretch for home on the play, but she couldn't beat the relay throw and was out at the plate.
Cassidy Lee (2-3) pitched all six innings and took the loss for the Coyotes.
It is the fifth time this year that the Coyotes have lost by one run. Eight of the team's 11 losses have been by two runs or less.
The same two teams are scheduled for an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday.
