SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino came into Saturday's doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Coyotes left Fiscalini Field in a tie for third place with Chico State after the Toros swept a doubleheader 4-2 and 4-3.
The Coyotes move to 15-10 overall and 15-9 in the CCAA.
In the opener,
Ethan Chapman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The freshman hit his seventh home run of the season tying him for the CCAA lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got on the board first with pair of runs in the top of the first. Kevin Pillar singled home the first run before Bryan Sturgis singled home the second run to put the Toros up 2-0. CSUSB got back within one with James Kono's second home run of the year and then just two batters later Chapman tied the game on a solo shot off the right field scoreboard.
The Toros took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to left field by Dean Benavidez before a CSUSB error allowed the final run of the game in the top of the ninth. The Coyotes had a chance to do some damage with the bases loaded and two outs, but Matt Phillips induced a pop out to end the game.
Bret Montgomery (4-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight in eight innings of work. Phillips picked up his sixth save of the season, throwing the final inning.
Trevor Longfellow (3-2) took the loss.
Coyotes took the first lead of the game in the nightcap when
Mike Lange sacrificed home
Bryant Veiga from third with a fly ball to center field in the bottom of the second.
Dominguez Hills tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on a sacrifice squeeze by Jose Jauregui before Kevin Pillar extended a hit streak to 26 games with a solo home run to left field in the fourth to put the Toros up 2-1.
CSUSB tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a Kono groundout that scored Hulbert to doubled down the left field line. Dominguez Hills retook the lead in top of the sixth off a two-run home run to left center by Steve Carillo to give the Toros a 4-2 lead.
The Coyotes threatened again in the seventh in their final at bats when
Darren Dworak doubled in the right field gap and then scored on a single up the middle by Chapman. Phillips though picked up his seventh save, and third straight, by getting a ground out to end the game.
Andrew Klausmeier (3-1) recorded the win while
Daniel Stenavich (2-3) took the loss for the Coyotes.
CSUSB steps away from CCAA play next week when it hosts Cal State San Marcos, Saturday, for a single game at 1 p.m.
