CARSON — Brianne Godfredson tossed a complete game shutout to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game of a doubleheader. CSUSB dropped the second game 2-0.
It was the first complete-game shutout for Godfredson (5-3) and the third for the Coyotes (11-16) this season. The sophomore scattered six hits and struck out two in the non-conference game.
Neither team was able to score through the first six innings. Cal State San Bernardino had runners in scoring position from the second through the fifth inning, but could not drive a run across the plate. The Coyotes had left six on base through those four innings.
CSUSB finally broke through in the top of the seventh with two runs. Vanessa Justin reached first to lead off the inning when she was plunked on the first pitch of the at bat. Carly Land, who came on to run for Justin, then advanced to second on a Jamie Leffingwell sacrifice bunt. Land went to third when the Toros' second baseman committed an error which also allowed Alex Mitchell to move up to second after putting the ball in play.
Britney Butler then hit a sac fly to left to score Land and Mitchell moved up to third. Courtney Wilhelms drove in another insurance run with a single to right center to score Mitchell.
Wilhelms led the way for CSUSB, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Butler was 1-for-2 with an RBI while Felicia Cervantes was the only other Coyote with a hit as she went 1-for-3.
The Toros scored first in the nightcap with two in the bottom of the third. CSUDH loaded the bases with a two-out walk by Emiley McEwen before Caitlin McGrath singled to center, scoring both Krista Gould and Katie Garcia who singled earlier in the inning.
The Coyotes put runners on first and second in the top of the fourth when Priscilla Curiel and Collinwood hit back-to-back singles, but the Toros turned a double play to squelch the threat. CSUSB put just two more runners on base in the final two innings and neither went past first base.
The Coyotes were held to just six hits as Wendy Espindola and Stephanie Jimenez combined for the shutout for CSUDH. Espindola scattered five hits in the first 3.1 innings while Jiminez gave up just one hit in the final 3.2. Cassidy Lee (2-4) threw all six innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.
Butler was the only Coyote to have multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-3.
Cal State San Bernardino will now travel to Turlock, Calif., to take on Cal State Stanislaus in a four-game series with doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday.
