HAYWARD — Cal State East Bay scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to upend Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2 in the first game of a postponed doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The second game was postponed after three innings of scoreless play.
For the fourth straight time the Coyotes (4-8, 3-2 CCAA) wound up on the wrong end of a one-run game and they held the Pioneers (3-6, 3-6 CCAA) scoreless for the first six innings.
CSUSB got on the board first in the top of the fourth when
Jacquelyn Holtzclaw, who reached base on a single, scored on an error on CSUEB's second baseman. Then in the in the sixth,
Alex Mitchell laced a lead-off single to right before being moved up to second on a
Britney Butler sacrifice bunt. Mitchell then got within 60 feet of scoring when she stole third. Holtzclaw then hit a sac fly to right to score Mitchell and put the Coyotes up 2-0.
Carly Land (0-4) was well in position to pick up her first win of the year after allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out two.
Then came the bottom of the seventh.
Nicole Freiberg led off the inning with a double to left before Land induced a pop up in foul territory for the first out and then got a fly ball to left for the second out. Land then hit Danielle Foster to put runners at first and second. A
Stefanie Pace error at second allowed the first run to score, to make it 2-1, before Caroline Schorn got the walk-off double to right to drive in the final two runs of the game.
The two will resume play in the second game of the doubleheader tomorrow at 10 a.m. before closing the series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
