Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO --- No matter how many times Cal State San Bernardino chipped away at Humboldt State's lead, the Coyotes could never overcame an early deficit, falling 5-4 to the Lumberjacks.

Despite having just five hits, the Coyotes (4-5) made use of every single hit. Britney Butler led the way, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. The senior closed out the series, going 7-for-16 (.438) with four RBIs, four runs scored, two home runs and a triple.

Humboldt State took an early lead and never let go after scoring two runs in the top of the second on a two-out single by Geneva Perrine. The Coyotes cut it to 2-1, the first of three times to cut the deficit to one, on a Carly Land ground out to first. Priscilla Curiel reached base on a lead off walk before Courtney Wilhelms pushed Curiel to third on a Jacks' error. Land then hit a ground ball to first and was tagged out on the play and Curiel beat the throw from first at the plate.

The Jacks added two more on a triple through the left, center field gap by Chrissy Stalf to put Humboldt up 4-1 through the top of the fifth.

The Coyotes tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning when Butler laced a two-out triple to center and then scored on a Jacquelyn Holtzclaw single to right. CSUSB cut it to 4-3 in the sixth when Wilhelms ripped a double to left center, scoring Curiel from first.

The Jacks pushed it out to a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh when Ally Blenis was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. The Coyotes tried to rally in the in their last at bat and put runners at first and second with two outs. Holtzclaw reached second after an error by the Jacks' second baseman and Ashley Collinwood went to first after she was plunked by a pitch. Felicia Cervantes singled to left to score Holtzclaw and leave runners at first and second. Collinwood and Cervantes were left stranded after Vanesa Hoover (2-5) picked up her second win in as many days by striking out Curiel.

Hoover tossed the complete game, striking out six. Cassidy Lee (1-1) took the loss for the Coyotes throwing all but a third of an inning.

Cal State San Bernardino now travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Wednesday, for a 1 p.m. CCAA doubleheader.
