SAN BERNARDINO
-- Despite trailing by double figures in the second half, Cal State San Bernardino showed plenty of fight and determination to come back from a 14-point deficit only to fall short 87-83 in overtime to visiting BYU-Hawaii in nonconference men's basketball Tuesday night.

Senior David Jefferson led the Coyotes with 17 and senior guards Aaron Hill and Corey Caston each had 15, but CSUSB had difficulty controling he ball. It committed 22 turnovers and struggled from the free throw line in the late going, hitting just 16 of 25 in the second half and OT.

The game was the Coyotes' season opener and they had their shot to post a win after rallying from 14 points -- 54-40 with 13:12 remaining in the game.

Senior Ryan Kinney jump-started a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer and fellow reserve Mike Carpenter scored his only points of the night on a fast-break and CSUSB trailed 54-45 with 12:52 left.

Jefferson added a layup and Caston added another that brought the Coyotes to within five.

BYUH stopped the run and added one of its own on two baskets from Marcus Whippy and a 3-pointer from Jake Dastrup and the Seasiders (1-1) led 61-52 with 8:41 left.

But in a three-minute plus span, CSUSB went on to grab its first lead of the second half with a 16-6 run. Jefferson had two layups and a free throw in that spurt and Hill hit a 3-pointer.

After Jet Chang's free throw put BYUH up 67-65, Caston answered right back with a 3-pointer and CSUSB led 68-67 with 4:29 left.

But down the stretch CSUSB hit just three of six free throws and the game was tied at 71-71 with 49 seconds left on Hill's free throw.

BYUH had a shot for the win in regulation, but a blown layup by Whippy and an errant 3-pointer from Chang at the buzzer sent the game into OT.

Two free throws from Hill tied the game at 74-74 with 2:47 left, but Whippy answered on the Seasiders' next possession with a 3-pointer and the Coyotes couldn't close the gap.

CSUSB shot 24 of 62 from the field for 38.7 percent and the Seasiders were 41 percent at 25-of-61.

The Coyotes return to the court Saturday night when they play at Westmont. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
