Box Score: Coyotes 5, CSU Monterey Bay 0
SAN BERNARDINO -- The lasting image of a four-game losing streak quickly went by the wayside Sunday afternoon.
And Jani Carmona was a big reason why the Cal State San Bernardino hope to begin a streak on a more positive note.
The Lompoc native fired in three goals and became just the fourth player in Coyotes history to record a hat trick as CSUSB dominated play with a 5-0 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA play on a hot, windy afternoon.
The victory snapped the Coyotes' four-game losing streak and marked their most points scored in a game since defeating CSU East Bay in September of 2009. They are now 6-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the CCAA heading into this weekend's game against Cal Poly Pomona. The teams meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Coyote Premier Field and conclude the series at CPP at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Carmona picked goals 7-9 on the season in this one and started it off in the 30th minute.
Casey Hirsch and
Unity Beddingfield worked the ball upfield, and Beddingfield fired a perfect pass that found Carmona one-on-one with Otters GK Graciela Holguin. Carmona brought out the goalkeeper and sent the shot far left for the 1-0 score.
Eleven minutes later,
Jordan Cleary scored her first goal of the season on a feed from
Carissa Kutkowski and popped the shot on the left side.
Carmona didn't waste much time once halftime was over as she earned goal No. 2 in the 48th minute. Kutkowski again set up a cross and Carmona again delivered.
Leading 3-0, Carmona completed her big day in the 65th minute when
Kristina Gomez found her teammate and Carmona drove in close and scored the goal on Otters reserve GK Andrea Davis.
Gomez added a goal to her assist in the 84th minute when she was on the receiving end of a pass from AnneMarie Tahramanis.
The Coyotes did not allow a SOG the entire game and allowed just one shot -- that from Shoshan Wangerin in the second half.
Tiffany Mallick picked up the win by playing just the first half. She improved her record to 6-5-1.
The Otters fell to 2-10-0, 1-9-0.
