SEASIDE -- Cal State San Bernardino outscored host Cal State Monterey Bay 11-1 in the opening minutes of the second half Friday night en route to a 48-point second half and an 83-59 CCAA men's basketball victory over the host Otters.
The scoring binge separated the two teams who were tied 35-all at halftime when Ian Hosford hit a 3-pointer at the intermission buzzer to knot the score after the Coyotes had built an 11-point lead in the first six minutes of the contest.
The Coyotes are now 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the CCAA as they head to San Francisco State for a Saturday night tussle with the Gators at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KCAA 1050-AM and webcast at www.csusbathletics.com.
The loss dropped the Otters to 5-10 on the season and 3-7 in the CCAA.
Senior center Devon Davis scored a career-high 20 points, hitting nine of 12 field goal attempts, grabbed five rebounds, dished off three assists, blocked a shot and made a steal in 22 minutes to lead CSUSB.
Forward Bryan LeDuc had another all-around game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot while senior Greg Williams came off the bench to score 11 points on five of seven shooting from the field. Junior point guard Corey Caston finished with 11 points, five assists and four steals.
The Coyotes shot 50 percent for the game (32 of 64), outrebounded the Otters 37-34 and made 15 steals, contributing to 24 turnovers by the Otters. Monterey Bay shot 38 percent (23 of 60) but were just six of 15 from the foul line (40 percent). Davion Berry led the Otters with nine points.
After the 11-1 run to start the second half, the Coyotes continued to pour it on, outscoring the hosts 26-6 to lead 61-41 with 9:33 left on a bucket by Davis. A David Jefferson jumper with 5:59 left made it 71-47 Coyotes and Head Coach Jeff Oliver started clearing the bench.
