Junior forward
Obi Agwu scored two goals and assisted on a third Tuesday as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Concordia University Irvine, 4-1, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory improved the Coyotes record to 4-0 on the season as they now prepare to begin CCAA conference play on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the defending NCAA Division II champions. Concordia's Eagles are now 2-1.
CSUSB entered the match ranked No. 8 in the NCAA West Region while the Eagles were ranked No. 5 in the NAIA coaches national pre-season poll.
The four wins to open the season is the best start for the team since 2002 when the Coyotes won their first five contests. They also won four straight to begin the 2001 season.
The Eagles jumped on top in the 10th minute of play as Ryan Angell fed a ball to Alex Picarelli on the left side of the penalty area and his volley deflected off a Coyote defender and past CSUSB goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha for a 1-0 Concordia lead.
Six minutes later, Agwu one-touched a crossing pass from junior
Albert Cabrera past Eagles' keeper James Rammelsberg for the equalizer.
The Coyotes took the lead in the 31st minute on sophomore
Billy Pellow's second goal of the season, running onto a centering pass from junior
Jose Godinez in the box and send a low shot into the back of the net.
Coming out of the half leading 2-1, Godinez scored just two minutes into the second half as he ran onto a pass into space around the 18-yard line from Agwu and drilled a low volley inside the far post. Agwu closed out the scoring with his third goal of the season at 87:15, running onto a through ball from junior
Jorge Aguirre on a counter-attack after Concordia was turned away at the CSUSB goal.
The Eagles were thwarted by DeLaRocha, who saved four shots in the final 45 minutes for CSUSB. The Coyotes outshot the Eagles 15-5, but Concordia failed to take advantage of nine corner kicks, eight of them in the second half.
