Jane Chafeh led Cal State San Bernadino's No. 2-ranked volleyball team to a pair of victories Friday on opening day at the UC San Diego Tritons Invitational, beating Mesa State College (see recap below) and University of Alaska-Anchorage by identical scores of 3-1.
The Coyotes are now 5-0 as they get ready to face Saginaw Valley State (Mich) at 11 a.m. and Northern Michigan at 4 p.m. on Saturday in RIMAC Arena on the UCSD campus.
The Coyotes lost the first set to Alaska-Anchorage, 25-19, but regained form to sweep the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-21. The Seawolves from the Great Northwest Athletic Conferernce are now 4-2 on the season.
Chafeh had 19 kills and 13 digs with two service aces against the Seawolves in the afternoon match. She wound up the day with 43 kills and 32 digs -- an average of 7.0 kills per game and 5.5 digs per game thus far in the tournament.
Backing her up against the Seawolves was sophomore outside hitter
Morgan Carty with a career-high 17 kills on .577 hitting (17 of 26). Sophomore middle blocker
Samantha Middleborn had 10 kills on .389 hitting (10 of 18) with three blocks, one of them solo.
Senior setter continued her strong play with 44 assists, nailed all four of her kill attempts and had six digs as well. Senior outside hitter
Ashtin Hall had a match-high 15 digs for CSUSB. The team hit .374 and is hitting .317 through five matches thus far this season.
McKenzie Moss led the Seawolves with 16 kills on .368 hitting with seven digs. Jackie Mathieson had 11 kills and six digs. Setter Calli Scott had 31 assists and eight digs. Shelby Hollister served up four aces. UAA hit just .198 for the match.
MATCH NO. 1 -- CSUSB 3, Mesa State 1
Chafeh was virtually unstoppable Friday morning as she accumulated 24 kills and 19 digs to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 3-1 victory over Mesa State College of Colorado in the first match of the UC San Diego Tritons Invitational.
Chafeh hit at a .435 clip in the match and now is averaging 4.85 kills and 4.31 digs per match through the first four contests of the young season. CSUSB is now 4-0 while the Mavericks dipped to 1-5 but not before taking a set from the Coyotes who had won their previous three matches in straight sets.
CSUSB rolled through the first two sets, winning 25-17 and 25-10. Mesa State then rallied to take the third set at 25-21 and pushed the Coyotes in set No. 4 before bowing 26-24.
In the third set, it was tied 12 times and there were three lead changes before the Mavericks prevailed. Overall, there were 22 lead changes in the four sets with only seven lead changes.
Hoffman had 41 assists and sophomore libero
Kelcie Tolan had 12 digs. Middleborn had eight kills and three blocks including a solo while sophomore outside hitter Carty had eight kills and two service aces. CSUSB hit .270 for the match.
Tess Andrews led the Mavericks with 14 kills. Meredith Dolny had a team-high 14 digs. Tara King had a solid all-around match with 17 assists, four service aces and two solo blocks. Mesa State hit just .031 as a team. The Mavericks were hurt by 28 attack errors.
Play got a little sloppy on the Coyotes side of the net. CSUSB committed 17 service errors and 18 attack errors in the match.
