PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Mesa State College shocked Cal State San Bernardino with a goal just 44 seconds into their non-conference women's soccer match here Friday night and then held the Coyotes scoreless over the next 89:16 to secure a 1-0 victory at Grand Canyon University.
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 1-3 in their final non-conference match prior to opening up CCAA conference play next Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Mavericks are now 2-0 on the season.
It was the second time this season that CSUSB failed to score.
Mesa State's Megan Swan took a crossing pass from Daniela Ramirez and one-timed a shot past Coyotes senior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons. Lyons was successful in stopping four other Maverick shots during the match on a humid night in Phoenix.
Julia Rasmussen, Mesa State's goalie, earned the shutout with three saves.
Both teams had 10 shots in the match but only three of CSUSB's attempts required the keeper to make a save.
In the second half, CSUSB had three consecutive shots on goal -- by
Lauren Zellmer,
Ashley Haagsma and
Lindsey Witz. Two went high over the crossbar and a third was wide right. A potential tying goal at 82:11 by Haagsma was blocked. Another try, this one by junor
Katie Liby, with 1:30 remaining in the match, was saved by Rasmussen.
