Coyotes try to add to win streak

CSUSB volleyball lteam hosts Cal State L.A., Dominguez Hills in arena

     Unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team hosts Cal State L.A. on Friday night and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday as it seeks to extend its unbeaten streak and remain atop the CCAA conference standings. 
    CSUSB, 14-0 overall, 7-0 in the CCAA and ranked No. 2 in the nation, will play at 7 p.m. both nights in Coussoulis Arena. 
    Cal State L.A. is 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA and tied for third place. The Golden Eagles are working on a four-match win streak. The Toros have struggled this year with a 1-13 record, 1-6 in the CCAA, sitting alone in 11th place in the 12-team conference. 
    COYOTES VS. CAL STATE L.A.. – The visiting Golden Eagles lead the series 19-18 but the Coyotes have won 10 of the last 13 meetings. L.A. handed CSUSB one of its four losses in 2008 at the Eagles' Nest, 3-1. 
    COYOTES VS. DOMINGUEZ HILLS – CSUSB has so dominated this series that it hasn't lost to the Toros since 1992. The Coyotes have a 34-5 record against the Toros. 
    STREAKS – The Coyotes have started the season 14-0, well shy of the team's all-time in-season win streak of 21 set in 2006. CSUSB won 17 straight to open the season in 2002. 
    HOME COOKING – CSUSB is working on a 21-match home win streak dating back to the start of the 2008 season. Overall, the Coyotes are 157-17 (90.1%) in Coussoulis Arena since the start of the 1997 season, 111-10 (91.5%) in CCAA play. 
    CHERNISS NEARS MILESTONE – Coyotes Head Coach Kim Cherniss has 396 victories in her CSUSB volleyball coaching career, four shy of the 400 mark. 
    NCAA TEAM STATS – Coyotes currently rank fourth in NCAA D-2 in hitting percentage (.296), 21st in kills per set (13.52), 24th in assists per set (12.40), 29th in blocking per set (2.26)….Cal State L.A. is 38th in assists (11.92), 22nd in hitting percentage (.251), and 36th in kills (13.08). 
    NCAA INDIVIDUAL STATS – CSUSB's Jane Chafeh ranks No. 3 in nation in kills per set (4.89)….Samantha Middleborn ranks 21st in hitting percentage (.381) and 50th in blocks per set (1.02)….Sara Hoffman is 35th in assists per set (10.31)….L.A.'s Gabriela Bulawczyk is 27th in kills per set (3.75). 
    CCAA TEAM STATS – Coyotes lead the CCAA in hitting percentage and opponent hitting percentage, limiting foes to .107 hitting in 14 matches….CSUSB is No. 2 in blocks, No. 3 in kills, and No. 4 in assists.
CCAA INDIVIDUAL STATS – Samantha Middleborn is No. 3 in hitting percentage and No. 1 in blocks per set…..Chafeh is No. 2 in kills per set….Hoffman is No. 5 in assists per set…. 
    YOTES NOTES -- Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Carty has been effective in her last three matches, averaging 2.6 kills per set, 2.5 digs per set and 1.4 blocks per set with 10 assists and five service aces…..redshirt freshman libero Camille Smith has averaged 11.7 digs per match over her last six matches as the starter….In addition to leading the team in hitting percentage and blocks, Samantha Middleborn also leads in service aces with 14…..sophomore Megan Johnson has 22 kills on .567 hitting in her last three matches to go with nine blocks…..Coyotes are 42-6 in sets played this season and have never been pushed to a fifth set thus far….eight of their wins have been sweeps….after this weekend, the Coyotes will be on the road until Oct. 21 when they host Cal Poly Pomona…. 
    EAGLES' WINGS – Randi Smart takes over as head coach in 2009 after being an assistant to Bill Lawler in recent years. Lawler resigned after the 2008 season after guiding CSULA to a CCAA championship in 2000 and 2005 and a West Region title in 2005... L.A.'s CCAA's losses are to No. 3-ranked UC San Diego and No. 16 Sonoma State…..Gabriela Bulaawczyk leads the team with 3.75 kills and 3.04 digs per set with 16 service aces…top blocker on the team is Marquis Mora with 49, including nine solo….Stefanie Gay is averaging 3.91 digs per set….
TOROS TIPS – Dominguez Hills' lone win is a 3-2 win over Cal State East Bay at home, prevailing 21-19 in a tight fifth set….Ashley Clark is averaging 2.72 kills and 2.61 digs per set to lead the Toros….Ashley Davison is the team's leading blocker with 24, nine solo…..Toros are hitting just .108 for the season while opponents are hitting .263 against them….the team has lost its last four in a row heading into the weekend.
