Cabrera's goal sinks UCSD, 1-0

Coyotes men now 8-2 on season, 4-2 in CCAA after weekend sweep

Albert Cabrera, right, controls the ball. He scored the match-deciding goal in 1-0 win over UC San Diego Sunday.
Junior forward Albert Cabrera's breakaway goal in the 35th minute of the first half Sunday was enough for the Coyotes to score a 1-0 victory over visiting UC San Diego in a CCAA conference men's soccer match at Coyote Premier field.
Cabrera's sixth goal of the season and his second match-winning goal came after Coyotes defender Brett Faggione collected a loose ball along the near sideline and served the ball into the front half as Cabrera ran onto it. Cabrera then blasted a low ball past oncoming UCSD goalkeeper Peter Akman.
The victory improved the Coyotes to 8-2 on the season, surpassing the team's victory total for all of 2008 (7) and moved them to 4-2 in the CCAA South Division. It was also the team's second straight shutout, having disposed of Cal State East Bay 7-0 on Friday.
The West Region No. 6-ranked Coyotes outshot UCSD (4-2-4, 1-2-3) 14-11.
Arath De La Rocha made four saves in goal for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes face a daunting task on Friday, hosting unbeaten Cal State L.A., currently ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 3 in the nation. CSUSB lost to the Golden Eagles in overtime in their first meeting earlier this month.
