Coyotes host Cal State East Bay, UCSD

CSUSB moves up to No. 8 in region poll after three straight wins

Sophomore Casey Hirsch scored her first goal of 2009 in win over Sonoma State.
Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team, winners of three matches in a row over regionally-ranked teams, host CCAA conference newcomer Cal State East Bay and perennial CCAA powerhouse UC San Diego this weekend at Coyote Premier Field.
The Coyotes are 4-4 on the season but are 3-1 in the CCAA and sit in a virtual second-place tie with the Tritons and Cal State Dominguez Hills since each team has nine points even though the other two teams have one more loss and have played one more match.
The streak started with a Coyotes victory over South Division leader Cal State L.A, (7-1, 4-1) currently ranked No. 2 in the West Region and followed it up with a 2-0 home win over No. 7 Humboldt State and a 2-1 double-overtime victory over No. 8 Sonoma State this past weekend.
The streak has enabled the Coyotes to move back into the region top 10 at No. 8 while Sonoma State dropped out.
Defense and timely scoring have proven a potent combination for the Coyotes in recent matches. CSUSB has outscored opponents 6-2 in the last three matches and have yielded just eight goals in eight contests.
Cal State East Bay enters Friday's contest at 12:30 p.m. with a 1-5-3 record, 0-3-1 in the CCAA, but the Pioneers have been in every match, tying region No. 3 Chico State 2-2 on the road and gaining a 0-0 tie with San Francisco State before losing 3-1 to UCSD and 1-0 to Cal State Stanislaus.
UC San Diego, winner of seven of the last nine CCAA championships, enters the weekend with a 5-2 record, 3-2 in the CCAA and a No. 5 ranking in the NCAA West Region. The Tritons have lost 1-0 at home to San Francisco State and lost to Chico State, 2-0, on the road.
CSUSB VS. CAL STATE EAST BAY – The Coyotes lead the all-time series against the school formerly known as Cal State Hayward, 5-3. Their last meeting was a 6-1 victory by the Coyotes over the Pioneers on Sept. 17, 1997. CSUEB joined the CCAA this year after being an independent in NCAA Division III.
CSUSB VS. UC SAN DIEGO – The Tritons have dominated the series, leading 24-5 with four ties. The Coyotes have beaten UCSD only twice since the Tritons entered the CCAA in 2000. The first win came at home in 2000, 4-2. The second was 1-0 in double overtime at UCSD on Sept. 28, 2008.
YOTES NOTES: Junior forward Unity Beddingfield is the team's leading scorer with seven points on two goals (both match-winners) and three assists. Sophomores Kristina Gomez and Jaclyn Clark each have a pair of goals. Freshman Allison Pena knocked in a match-winning goal and garnered two assists in her first two matches of the season this past weekend…..Senior Laura Lyons has been solid in goal for the Coyotes with 36 saves and an .818 save percentage and a shared shutout with Tiffany Mallick in the 2-0 win over Humboldt State…..CSUSB has a big edge in corner kicks over opponents, 33-15……
PIONEER PATTER – East Bay gave Seattle Pacific, the defending national champion and currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and the West Region, all it could handle, losing just 1-0 to the Falcons on Sept. 5 in Seattle…..Shianna Falk is the leading scorer with two goals and one assist…goalkeeper Nina Cefalo has 37 saves and has yielded 13 goals thus far, an average of 1.34 per match….opponents have a 42-21 edge in corner kicks thus far….the Pioneers have been outshot 123-87 in nine matches to date.
TRITONS TIPS – Typical of UCSD teams, the Tritons have been stingy on allowing goals, yielding just six thus far while scoring 18 themselves. Goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong has made 11 saves while logging 577 minutes in goal…..Sarah McTigue and Jessica Wi are tied for the scoring lead with eight points. McTigue has a team-high four goals, two being match-winners….Anne Wethe has a team-high three assists….The Tritons are aggressive on offense leading in corner kicks 40-18 and shots 96-57…..
