SAN BERNARDINO -- Three-time defending CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino greeted conference newcomer Cal State East Bay's first foray into NCAA Division II play with a 3-0 sweep of their match Saturday night before 220 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes, ranked No.2 in NCAA Division II, are now 9-0 on the season and 2-0 in the CCAA. The Pioneers dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Fifteen players saw action for the Coyotes in the match, which they controlled 25-13, 25-21 and 25-18.
The victory extended the Coyotes' home win streak to 19, dating back to the start of the 2008 season.
Jane Chafeh, the CCAA player of the week this past week, led CSUSB with 13 kills on .455 hitting with a service ace and six digs.
Samantha Middleborn contributed seven kills and
Ashtin Hall had six. The Coyotes hit .284 in the match.
Alyssa Auck took over at setter for the final two sets and had a match-high 24 assists.
Brianna Bryant led the Pioneers with eight kills on .267 hitting with five block assists. Roxanne Neely and Amanda Limeberger combined for 22 assists for the Pioneers, who hit just.093 for the match. CSUSB led in kills 38-26 and digs 26-23.
The Coyotes had 15 blocks to 11 for the Pioneers. Sophomore
Morgan Carty led CSUSB with four.
With the twin wins this weekend, the Coyotes are now 106-9 in Coussoulis Arena since the start of the 2001 season and 77-3 in CCAA conference matches.
CSUSB hits the road next week for a key match at Chico State on Friday night followed by a match at Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday. The Coyotes return home Sept. 25 to host Humboldt State.
