TURLOCK -- Western Washington was 1-4 entering the quarterfinals Sunday in the Gold Bracket of the 2009 Mizuno Tournament of Champions softball tournament and Cal State San Bernardino was 4-1, coming off a 5-4 win over a nationally ranked team in Dixie State.
However, it was the Vikings advancing to the semifinals, scoring three runs in the first extra inning to beat the Coyotes 4-2 and improve to 13-14 on the season. The Coyotes left town with a 4-2 tournament record including wins over two ranked teams, but are now 18-26 on the season.
The game was tied 1-1 after seven innings so the international tiebreaker rule was activated for the eighth inning, meaning each team got to place a runner on second before the first batter came to the plate.
Western Washington took full advantage with three runs on two hits and a Coyotes error. The first run came home on a throwing error by
Ashley Collinwood and the second run came in on a double and a single brought in the third run of the inning with none out.
Debbie Shisler relieved starter
Courtney Wilhelms for the Coyotes and retired the side without further damage.
CSUSB got a run back when Shisler was placed on second, then stole third and scored on Collinwood's sacrifice fly, making the final 4-2 in favor of the Vikings.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Tori Beaudette singled in
Priscilla Curiel who had reached base on an error.
Jessica Rosencrants (5-5) went the distance for the Vikings, yielding just two unearned runs while giving up just four hits and striking out five. Wilhelms (2-5) went seven innings and two of the four runs charged to her were unearned.
