Sonoma's 1-0 win earns series sweep

Coyotes have tying run thrown out at plate in 9th; Brooks pitches well

Aaron Brooks pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, shutting out Sonoma State on Sunday. CSUSB eventually lost 1-0.
ROHNERT PARK -- Sonoma State defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, Sunday in the final game of their four-game series to earn a series sweep and move closer to the lead in the CCAA conference.
The Seawolves and Coyotes battled through seven scoreless innings before SSU scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth without benefit of a hit. Two walks, a wild pitch and a sacrifice led to the games only run coming across on a sacrifice fly.
CSUSB tried to tie the game in the top of the ninth as pinch-hitter Chris LeFay doubled with one out and was replaced by pinchrunner Danny Soles. After Chris Olsen popped out, freshman Darren Dworak singled to center but Soles was through out at the plate to end the game.
The Coyotes squandered a powerhouse pitching effort by freshman Aaron Brooks who blanked the Seawolves -- ranked No. 18 in the nation and No. 5 in the West Region -- for seven innngs on the only two hits they had in the game. Brooks struck out eight and walked four.
CSUSB had eight hits in the game but failed to dent home plate.
CSUSB is now 12-15 in the CCAA and 18-20 overall as they prepare to take on UC San Diego on Thursday and Friday in a pair of single games at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. UCSD is 21-7 in the CCAA and 27-8 overall and ranked No. 6 in the nation and No.1 in the West Region.
The Seawolves are now 18-2 at home this season, 22-10 in the CCAA and 30-11 overall.
Four Sonoma pitchers combined for the shutout with Kendall Davis going five innings and allowing three hits while striking out three. Troy Brown (1-0) got the win while Cameron Ray picked up his first save. Garrett Nelsen (0-1), who walked a batter to lead off the bottom of the eighth and that runner eventually scored, took the loss. It was the only batter he faced in the game.
