ROHNERT PARK -- When Cal State San Bernardino's softball team left for this weekend's four game series at Sonoma State, they apparently forgot their bats.
As a result, the Seawolves -- albeit well-armed in the pitching department -- swept the Coyotes twice, the latest sweep coming on Saturday as SSU administered a 10-1 beat down in game one and then shut out the Coyotes 2-0 in game two. CSUSB scored just two runs in 28 innings in the series.
SSU won Friday's doubleheader 6-1 and 3-0.
The Coyotes are now 21-31 overall and 12-16 in the CCAA and in seventh place while the Seawolves are now 31-19 overall and 15-12 in the CCAA. The hosts are also ranked No. 6 in the West Region and may move up.
CSUSB will close out the 2009 regular season at home Friday and Saturday, hosting defending NCAA Division II champion Humboldt State, the current CCAA leader at 20-8 and ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region.
The Coyotes trail SSU and UC San Diego, both tied for fourth at 15-12, by four games with only four to play and only the top four teams advance to the CCAA championship tournament.
In the first game Saturday, the Seawolves jumped on CSUSB for 10 runs, nine of which were ruled unearned thanks to three errors charged to CSUSB freshman third baseman
Alex Mitchell. However, Sonoma also collected 10 hits in two innings off Coyotes starter and losing pitcher
Debbie Shisler (12-10).
The game was shortened to 4.5 innings by the eight-run mercy rule.
Brianne Godfredson relieved Shisler and pitched two innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Lindsay Emmel (two innings) and Brittany Williams (three innings) pitched five innings of four-thit ball and struck out three with Williams (11-3) getting the win.
The only Coyote run came on a solo home run by freshman
Courtney Wilhelms in the top of the first, her second of the season.
In the nightcap, Godredson was tagged for two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Kayla Ledford and Simone Brandalise. Sophomore left-hander
Cassidy Lee came on in the third to pitch four effective innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit and striking out five Seawolves.
The Seawolf pitching tandem of Brittany Reynolds and Emmel combined to blank the Coyotes on just two hits while striking out three and walking one. Emmel (14-9) got credit for the win.
