ROHNERT PARK -- Junior right-hander
Daniel Stenavich had Sonoma State -- ranked 18th in the nation and No. 5 in the West Region -- in the palm of his hand, shutting the Seawolves out on six hits for six innings Friday.
Then, the roof caved in the bottom of the seventh as the Seawolves, trailing 2-0, erupted for four runs on three hits, all of them charged to Stenavich, en route to a 5-2 CCAA conference victory over the Coyotes before 217 fans at Seawolf Field.
It was the first loss of the season for Stenavich (3-1), the CCAA's earned run average leader entering the contest at 2.68
The two teams hook up for a doubleheader at noon Saturday and close out the four-game series with a solo affair on Sunday.
Sonoma State improved to 27-11 overall and 19-10 in the CCAA where they shared second place with Cal State L.A. entering this weekend's play. The Coyotes are now 18-17 overall and 12-12 in the CCAA.
Unranked CSUSB was in the fifth spot entering the game.
The Coyotes went ahead 1-0 in the third when freshman
Darren Dworak reached base on an error, advanced to second on a single by
Kyle Davis.
Brent Planck moved both runners along with a sacrifice and
Johnnie Haas drove in his team-leading 33rd run of the season with a sacrifice fly.
It remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Davis singled again and came around to score on Planck's double to left field to give Stenavich a 2-0 cushion to work with.
SSU broke through in the home half of the seventh. Three straight hits, the last one being a run-scoring double by Joe Slater, made it 2-1. Stenavich hit a batter to load the bases and Cameron Cook walked to force in the tying run.
Jorge Dryjanski relieved Stenavich and he promptly walked Kyle Jones to produce the go-ahead run, making it 3-2 Sonoma.
Chad Borowski then relieved Dryjanski and one out later Jacob Fiss produced the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
The Seawolves got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Danny Pignataro's second homer of the season off Borowski.
Gary Moran started on the mound for SSU and pitched six innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out four. Taylor Lewis (5-1) pitched one inning and got credit for the win while Brian Flint went two hitless innings of relief to collect the save, his fifth of the season.
Davis, Planck and
Jordan Lowe each had two hits in the eight-hit Coyotes attack. CSUSB stranded 10 runners on the basepaths.
