CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills broke open a tight ballgame with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 9-3 CCAA conference baseball victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Toro Field.
The win evened the series at 1-1 with a doubleheader scheduled Saturday at 11 a.m. at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. CSUSB is now 10-9 on the season (6-4 in the CCAA) while the Toros are 11-8 overall (7-3 CCAA).
The Coyotes mustered just four hits off three Toros pitchers. Matt Hopps (2-1) got credit for the win, going seven innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking three. Danny Torres and Paul Klingsberg each pitched an inning and allowed one hit between them.
Joe Martinez (0-4) went 4.2 innings for the Coyotes, yielding four runs, just two of them earned. The Toros scored three runs off Casey Cassidy in relief of Martinez and
Ernie Medina gave up the final two runs in a 2.1 inning stint on the mound.
The Coyotes went up 2-1in the second inning as
Jordan Lowe walked and with two out, catcher
Chris Olsen homered to drivve in Lowe ahead of him. The Coyotes added a run in the ninth when freshman
Andrew Harrison knocked in
Cody Madison with a single after Madison was hit by a pitch and stole second.
Jon Alia continued his hot hitting, going three-for-five with three runs scored and two RBI in a 13-hit Toros attack.
