Host Cal State San Bernardino opened up a 9-0 lead in the first three innings Tuesday and held on for an 11-9 non-conference baseball victory over Cal State San Marcos at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The game was eerily similar to the final game of the Cal State Stanislaus series when the Coyotes staked themselves to a 13-0 lead over the Warriors only to hold on for a 17-14 win on March 21.
CSUSB is now 16-13 on the season while the Cougars are 16-9.
Junior shortstop
Kyle Davis and senior centerfielder
Johnnie Haas each drove in three runs while junior left fielder
Cody Madison was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace a 15-hit Coyotes attack against five San Marcos pitchers.
San Marcos rallied with four runs in the fifth, three coming on Dane Ponciano's eighth home run of the season over the right field fence. CSUSM added three more in the sixth, the big blow being a two-run triple by Johnny Ohamen who later scored on a Coyotes throwing error.
Leading just 9-8, the Coyotes fashioned two runs in the bottom of the sixth as
Jesus Beltran doubled and scored on a single by Madison who later came home on a sacrfice fly by catcher
Chris Olsen, who was inserted in the game after starting catcher
Chris LeFay sustained a leg injury trying catch a foul pop near the backstop.
San Marcos got a run back in the eighth as reliever
Jorge Dryjanski walked in a run with the bases loaded and two out but then induced Omahen to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Dryjanski retired the side in order in the ninth to get his first save of the season.
Trevor Longfellow, the fifth of six Coyotes pitchers, picked up his first win of the season.
The Coyotes resume CCAA conference play on Thursday with a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona. The teams will play two single games at Pomona on Thursday and Friday at 3 p.m. and finish the series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
