Curiel HR gives CSUSB 9-8 win

Toros take nightcap, 8-2, to split four-game softball series

Priscilla Curiel hit two home runs, including the game-winner Sunday in a 9-8 victory over CSU Dominguez Hills.
Sophomore Priscilla Curiel belted a game-winning, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday to give Cal State San Bernardino a 9-8 CCAA conference softball victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Coyote Softball Park.
The Toros came back to win the nightcap 8-2 as the teams finished their four game series with two wins apiece.
The Coyotes head for the Mizuno Tournament of Champions on Friday in Turlock with a 14-22 record, 9-11 in the CCAA while the Toros, ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division II West Region, head for the same tournament with a 23-13 record, 13-7 in the CCAA.
CSUSB led 6-2 in the opener before the Toros rallied for four runs to tie the game in the fifth. The Coyotes went up 8-6 on back-to-back solo home runs by Stefanie Quinn and Curiel to take an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
The Toros tied the game at 8-8 on a two-run homer by Katie Garcia, her first of the season.
However, Curiel's second homer of the game to lead off the bottom of the seventh off losing pitcher Wendy Espindola (1-1) gave CSUSB the win. Sophomore left-hander Cassidy Lee (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Coyotes.
Both teams had 12 hits in the game. Senior Debbie Shisler started for the Coyotes and gave up six runs in five innings, only three of which were earned but had nothing to do with the decision. Toros starter Regina Farfan gave up six runs, four earned, in just three innings but she, too, was not involved in the decision.
Emiley McEwen who had five hits in Saturday's doubleheader, was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Garcia was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Toros. Courtney Wilhelms was 3-for-3 for the Coyotes while Brittany Hoban and Curiel were both 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In the second game, three Coyotes errors led to five unearned runs for the Toros. Wilhelms (0-4) took the loss, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up nine hits and giving up all eight runs. Farfan, knocked out early in game one, pitched a complete-game six-hitting to improve her season record to 15-7.
Amber Angel was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Toros. Jessica Marlow was 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead a 10-hit Toros attack. Curiel was 2-for-3 for the Coyotes and Jacquelyn Holtzclaw was 2-for-2.
