Toros sweep Coyotes, 1-0, 12-0

Unearned run costs CSUSB in opener; mercy rule halts game two

Debbie Shisler tosses four-hitter but loses 1-0 on a first-inning error against Toros.

CARSON – Former Cal State San Bernardino pitcher Regina Farfan shut out her former team on four hits and four Cal State Dominguez Hills pitchers combined for a shutout in game two as the Toros swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from the Coyotes, 1-0 and 12-0, Tuesday at Toro Field.
The Coyotes are now 12-20 on the season while the Toros are 18-10.
Farfan outdueled the Coyotes' Debbie Shisler in the opener with the only run of the game being an unearned one following an error by CSUSB in the bottom of the first inning.
Shisler (8-6) gave up just four hits herself in seven innings and didn't walk anybody as the Toros were handcuffed to the point they only left three runners on base. Farfan struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in her tour de force to improve to 10-7 on the season.
Katie Garcia led off the first for the Toros, reaching on an error by Coyotes second baseman Brittany Hoban, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Khryssi Steele and then scored on a two-out single to center by Liz Vasquez.
The Coyotes stranded six runners and had their chances to score come up empty.
Freshman Courtney Wilhelms doubled to center with one out in the fifth but was left there. Senior Tori Beaudette tripled with two out in the seventh but Farfan struck out Wilhelms swinging to end the game.
The second game was shortened to 4.5 innings by the eight-run mercy rule after the Toros exploded for eight runs in the first inning and four more in the second to celebrate the 300th career win of their head coach, Jim Maier.
Dominguez Hills pounded out 14 hits off four CSUSB pitchers. Freshman Maggie Karros was ripped for six runs on five hits before recording an out in the first inning. Shisler, Cassidy Lee and Brianne Godfredson also entered the circle for the Coyotes. Godfredson pitched two innings of two-hit, scoreless ball.
The Coyotes managed just three hits off four Toros pitchers with Kaci Carroll (7-2) picking up the win with two innings of two-hit relief after Farfan pitched the first inning of the rout. Ashley Collinwood had the only extra base hit for CSUSB, a double.
Steele led the Toros with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
CSUSB takes a break for Winter Quarter finals and then will host the same Toros for a four-game CCAA conference series on March 28-29 at Coyote Softball Park.
