Chafeh's 29 kills helps CSUSB win battle of the two Inland Empire powers

Jane Chafeh set a personal career best of 29 kills in Thursday's 3-2 win over Cal Baptist.
    RIVERSIDE -- Junior outside hitter Jane Chafeh planted a kill for the final point in the fifth set Thursday night as NCAA No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino defeated NAIA No. 2 Cal Baptist, 3-2, in a dramatic women's volleyball match before 356 fans in the Lancers gym.
    The Coyotes improved to 27-1 on the season while the Lancers are now 24-5.
    CSUSB prevailed 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 18-16 in the match which lasted two hours and eight minutes one night before the Coyotes take the court against San Francisco State in its bid to secure a fourth CCAA conference title. The CSUSB-SFSU match is set for 7 p.m. Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.
    Chafeh set a new career record for herself with her 29 kills on .480 hitting. She had just five attack errors in 50 swings that included the match-deciding point. Chafeh also had 13 digs and four blocks, one of them solo.
    Backing her up were sophomore middle blocker Samantha Middleborn with 12 kills and seven blocks; sophomore outside hitter Morgan Carty with seven kills, 11 digs and four blocks and sophomore Megan Johnson w ith five kills and six blocks.
     CSUSB libero Camille Smith had 19 digs while senior setter Sara Hoffman logged 53 assists, a season high for her.
     NAIA all-American Fei Shi led the Lancers with 21 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Freshman Ingrid Carmona had 20 kills and three service aces. Danielle Sargant collected 43 assists.
    CSUSB hit .321 for the match with 62 kills in 140 swings and just 17 errors while the Lancers had 67 kills in 166 swings and 31 attack errors while hitting just .217 for the match. CSUSB's front line had two solo blocks and 24 block assists which translates to 14 total blocks. CBU had just five total blocks.
    The sets were so competitive that there were 36 ties in the five sets, 17 of them in the fourth set and 12 lead changes.
     CSUSB now leads the all-time series 14-9, having won the last two meetings of the two best collegiate volleyball programs in the Inland Empire.
