Volleyball team puts 16-match win streak on line in CCAA road matches

Jane Chafeh (28) and Megan Johnson await opponent's play at the net.
And, then there were two – just two undefeated women's volleyball teams in NCAA Division II – Cal State San Bernardino and Concordia-St. Paul.
This weekend, both teams put their victory streaks on the line.
Concordia (19-0) is the two-time defending national champion and holder of the current NCAA record for consecutive wins – 56 and counting -- since their loss to the Coyotes in the first match of 2008, 3-0, in San Bernardino.
The Coyotes (16-0) hasn't lost since dropping a 3-2 decision to CSP in the 2008 national title match in St. Paul, Minn., last December. CSUSB is 9-0 and leading the CCAA conference by one game over UC San Diego.
Not so coincidentally, the Golden Bears and Coyotes rank 1-2 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national top 25 poll with UCSD at No. 3 because its only loss this season has been to the Coyotes.
CSUSB is taking its show on the road to face Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a match at 7 p.m. Saturday at San Francisco State which is enjoying success in the second year of its return to the sport of volleyball after a four-year hiatus.
The host Otters come into Friday's match with a 7-10 overall record, 2-7 in the CCAA. The team is 3-6 at home this season. SFSU is tied for third with Sonoma State, Chico State and Cal State L.A. at 6-3 and is 13-4 overall.
COYOTES VS. OTTERS – Cal State San Bernardino leads the series 11-0.
COYOTES VS. GATORS – CSUSB leads the series 17-1.
COACH NEARS MILESTONE – Coyotes Head Coach Kim Cherniss is two wins shy of 400 in her CSUSB coaching career. She is now in her 19th season with a record of 398-174 heading into the weekend.
CCAA TEAM STATS – Coyotes rank No. 1 in hitting percentage (.299), No. 1 in opponent hitting percentage (.113), No. 1 in assists (12.69), No. 2 in kills per set (13.67) and No. 2 in blocks per set (2.23).
