Junior forward
Albert Cabrera's goal in the 78th minute Sunday was enough to give host Cal State San Bernardino a 1-0 CCAA conference men's soccer victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills and a sweep of their 2009 home-and-home series.
The Coyotes improved to 9-3 on the season, 5-3 in the CCAA, giving them 15 points but still leaving them a point behind the Toros – 6-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the CCAA's South Division. The Toros are holding on for dear life in second spot with the Coyotes in third.
Cabrera tied teammate
Obi Agwu for the most goals on the CSUSB team with his seventh score of the season, coming off a through ball from senior midfielder
Jeremiah Marquez that Cabrera zipped past Toros goalkeeper Markus Dickerson. It was Cabrera's third match-deciding goal of the season.
Dominguez Hills had their chances for the equalizer but Coyotes goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha stopped six shots on goal including a flurry in the final minutes as the proud Toros, the 2008 NCAA Division II champions, fought hard to avoid the loss.
CSUSB won the first meeting in Carson by the same score, 1-0.
The Toros outshot the Coyotes 12-6.
Andrew Marinez, Greg Piechota, Brian Alvarez and Alex Munoz combined for 11 of the Toros shots in the match.
Both teams played tough, aggressive defense, resulting in seven yellow cards and a red card handed out.
CSUSB's ninth win equals the most wins in a season for the men's program since 2005 with eight matches remaining. The Coyotes are on the road next week to play at Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
The team is now 6-2 at home this season.
