LA JOLLA -- Senior Danny Rodriguez scored on a hard volley from the 18-yard line in the 85th minute Friday night to give West Region No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino a 2-1 CCAA men's soccer victory over host UC San Diego under the lights at Triton Field.
It was the seventh goal of the season for Rodriguez who collected a pass from junior forward
Albert Cabrera and beat Tritons goalkeeper Peter Akman to his right. Junior forward
Obi Agwu put the Coyotes on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute, his ninth of the season.
The victory improved CSUSB to 13-3-1, 9-3-1 in the CCAA while the Tritons are now 7-6-4 overall and 4-6-3 in the CCAA. The win enabled the Coyotes to sweep the season series from UCSD for the second straight year.
The 13 wins is the most by a Coyotes men's soccer team since 1993 when the team went 13-4-3 overall. The all-time win record is 16 set by the 1987 team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four. The Coyotes have three regular season matches remaining to tie that mark.
The aggressive CSUSB side was credited with 23 shots, 10 of them on goal, forcing Akman to make eight saves. The Coyotes defense limited the Tritons to 10 shots, just three on goal and junior keeper
Arath De La Rocha saved two of them.
After a scoreless first half, Agwu put CSUSB up 1-0, but the Tritons got the equalizer in the 75th minute as Shane Micheil connected on a 30-yard blast after a shot by James Kukura was blocked and came out past the 18 and found Micheil's feet. His shot went into the upper portion of the net.
That set up the heroics by Rodriguez who earned his fourth match-winning goal of the season.
The Coyotes travel to the Bay Area on Saturday to face Cal State East Bay in a 2 p.m. match on Sunday. CSUSB decked the Pioneers 7-0 in their first meeting in San Bernardino.
