The 2009 win streak may be over, but the season goal remains the same – winning a conference championship and gaining a high-seed for the NCAA tournament a month from now.
That's the position of Cal State San Bernardino, 19-1 overall, 12-1 in the CCAA and ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 3 in the nation, as it prepares for a three-match homestand that includes one ranked opponent – Chico State.
One streak that is in tact and will be challenged this week is the Coyotes' current home winning streak of 23 straight dating back to the start of the 2008 season. CSUSB is 6-0 in the friendly confines of Coussoulis Arena so far in 2009.
HOUSE OF PAIN – The Coyotes rarely lose at home in any year. The team is 161-17 in Coussoulis Arena since the start of the 1997 season, 115-10 in CCAA play. Last home loss was to Western Washington in the 2007 West Regional title match. The last home loss in CCAA play was to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 30, 2005.
CHERNISS MILESTONE – Head Coach
Kim Cherniss will be honored before Wednesday night's game with the Broncos in celebration of her 400th career victory at CSUSB since becoming the coach in the fall of 1991. Cherniss reached the milestone with a 3-0 sweep at San Francisco State on Oct. 10.
COYOTES VS. BRONCOS – The Coyotes are 22-9 against the Broncos since the start of the 1995 season and have won seven of the last eight meetings. Last loss to CPP was 3-0 at Pomona in 2008. Overall, CSUSB leads the series 23-22. The first ever meeting of the two teams was Oct. 25, 1988, a 3-0 Broncos win. CPP won the first 11 meetings but CSUSB gained its first win over the Broncos on Nov. 13, 1993, a 3-2 decsion. Pomona has beaten CSUSB only four times since the start of the 1998 season.
COYOTES VS. STANISLAUS – CSUSB leads the series 29-2. Last loss to the Warriors was 3-2 on Nov. 3, 2000, at Stanislaus.
COYOTES VS. CHICO ST. – CSUSB leads the series 29-2. Last loss to the Wildcats was Sept. 23, 1995, 3-2, at the Coyote Classic Tournament, three years before Chico joined the CCAA conference.
CCAA TEAM STATS – The Coyotes lead the conference in hitting percentage (.289), opponent hitting percentage (.122), assists (12.75/set), and are No. 2 in kills behind UCSD (13.65/set). CSUSB is No. 2 in blocks per set (2.10) behind Humboldt State. CSUSB is ninth in digs per set (14.29).

Morgan Carty has been impressive in recent matches, averaging 2.6 kills and 3.2 digs per set with 10 blocks, including five against UC San Diego and boosted her hitting percentage to .278. She is co-leader of the team in service aces now with 21, with seven coming in her last three matches (four against East Bay)….CSUSB is 58-10 in sets through 20 matches this season….should the team pick up its 20th win this week, it would mark the 13th straight year of 20 or more wins, a streak that started in 1997……Coyotes are a popular opponent on the road, where attendance at their matches averages 380 while home attendance is just under 300 per match….largest crowd to see CSUSB this season is 919 at UCSD last Saturday night…Pomona drew 827 fans to see the Coyotes-Broncos on Sept. 23…..
Samantha Middleborn is the team leader in blocks (63), solo blocks (9), blocks per set (0.98) and is tied with Carty for the most service aces (21)…..sophomore
Megan Johnson has the fewest attack errors (23) of the starters and is hitting .398 while averaging 1.54 kills and 0.81 blocks per game. Johnson has eight solo blocks and is No. 2 in blocks with 52….
