Cal State San Bernardino moved one step closer to a possible post-season tournament berth Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in a CCAA conference men's soccer match before 276 fans at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory improved the Coyotes to 12-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the CCAA. The 12 wins equals the program's best season in the last decade, set in 2003 when CSUSB advanced to the conference tournament semifinals.
Cal State Stanislaus, coming off a 1-0 shutout of Cal Poly Pomona, fell to 8-6-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes caught a break in the 31st minute when senior defender
Ryan Larson's header off a corner kick by senior midfielder
Jeremiah Marquez was deflected into the net for a 1-0 CSUSB lead.
However, the Warriors got the equalizer just 50 seconds from halftime when Terry Gross collected a ball along the end line and lofted it in front of the goal where Victor Regalado outleaped CSUSB goalkeeper Arath DeLaRoach to head the ball into the net for his 10th goal of the season.
The Coyotes took the lead back in the 74th minute as junior
Albert Cabrera collected a pass from junior
Obi Agwu above the 18-yard-line and broke away from two defenders to hit a low volley inside the far post for that match-winner.
Javier Rosales had six saves in goal for the Warriors while DeLaRocha stopped five Stanislaus tries. CSUSB outshot the visitors 14-10.
The Coyotes go on the road next weekend for CCAA matches at UC San Diego on Friday and at Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Sunday.
