Tritons win CCAA showdown 3-1

Coyotes can't recover from losing first two sets; now 19-1, 12-1 in CCAA

Morgan Carty had 10 kills, 13 digs and five block assists in 3-1 loss to UC San Diego Saturday night.
    LA JOLLA -- In another classic showdown between the two best teams in the CCAA conference over the last nine years, UC San Diego halted Cal State San Bernardino's 19-match win streak Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on homecoming night in RIMAC Arena.
    The Tritons won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-16 before the Coyotes rallied to blow out the Tritons in the third set, 25-13. 
    The teams were tied at 19-all in the fourth set when the Tritons went on a 6-1 run to close out the match 25-20, thus improving to 20-1 on the season and moving into a tie for first place in the CCAA with the Coyotes as 12-1. 
     CSUSB won the first meeting of the two teams, ranked No.2 and No.3 in the nation and No.1 and No. 2 in the West Region, respectively, 3-1 in San Bernardino on Sept. 12.
     Junior Jane Chafeh led the Coyotes with 19 kills and 14 digs while sophomore Morgan Carty had 10 kills, 13 digs and five block assists. Sara Hoffman was credited with 44 assists in the match.
     Sylvia Schmidt, the CCAA player of the week this past week, led the Tritons with18 kills. Katie Condon had 11 kills and nine digs. Julia Freidenberg had nine kills and Roxanne Brunstring had 16 digs.
     In the third set, the Coyotes jumped out to 13-4 lead and led 19-13 before going on a 6-0 run to close out the set with three points coming on Chafeh's kills off serves by Samantha Middleborn, who finished with nine kills in the middle and two service aces.
     CSUSB was up 5-3 early in the fourth set, but UCSD took an 11-9 lead before Megan Johnson and Carty nailed back to back kills to make it 11-11.  CSUSB got back into a tie at 19-all on a block by Johnson, but UCSD responded with a 6-1 run at the end.
     The Coyotes return home to face Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Coussoulis Arena.
