18 wins and counting for CSUSB

Volleyball team's unbeaten streak on line at East Bay and No. 3 UC San Diego

Associate Head Coach Danny Scott encourages team during a match timeout.
Unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Cal State San Bernardino heads off on one of the strangest road trips it has ever taken – flying to Oakland Friday to play at Cal State East Bay, flying to San Diego after the match, stay in a hotel and then play UC San Diego in La Jolla on Saturday night.
The stakes are high for the Coyotes – defend its 18-0 record (11-0 in the CCAA) against an improving Cal State East Bay team that has won four CCAA conference matches since it lost to the Coyotes, 3-0, on Sept. 12 – then face a savvy, quick-hitting UCSD team that is 18-1 (10-1 in the CCAA) and ranked No. 3 in the nation.
“Strangely enough, I don't feel the same type of uncomfortable pressure I normally feel when we go there (to San Diego). I've come to realize that we have to let the season play out,” said Head Coach Kim Cherniss
“No matter what happens – win or lose – we have to learn from it and go forward. Either outcome helps us do that. Obviously, we want to win, for sure.”
Cherniss that she hears from some quarters that trying to go through a season undefeated puts undue pressure on teams who focus on that rather than the goal of a championship.
“We can't wish to be undefeated and we can't wish to lose a match,” said Cherniss. “We have to consider each match an opportunity to achieve our goal. Last year we lost to San Diego, L.A. and Pomona on the road and we still won the conference, won the regional and made it to the national championship match. The process of becoming a very good team is more important.”
