LA JOLLA -- Senior outside hitter Rebecca Bailey delivered a kill shot for the final point of the fifth set Friday night as UC San Diego, ranked No. 16 in the nation, handed No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino its first loss of the 2008 season, 3-2, in a CCAA conference volleyball match at RIMAC Arena.
Bailey was one of four Tritons who were in double figures in kills, leading a balanced attack that overtook the Coyotes after CSUSB had won the first two sets of the match 26-24 and 25-22. UCSD responded with a 25-16 win in the third set, 25-20 in the fourth to force the Coyotes to a fifth set for the first time this year. UCSD prevailed 15-12.
The Coyotes, now 12-1 on the season and 5-1 in the CCAA, return home Saturday night to face Cal Baptist in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. in Coussoulis Arena. The Lancers are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA national poll.
Hillary Williamson had a match-high 17 kills for UCSD while Kim Carpenter and Bailey each had 12 kills while Sylvia Schmidt had 11. Elaine Chen had 30 assists as the Tritons hit .229 for the match to a poor .145 for CSUSB.
Jessica Granados had a team-high 13 kills for the Coyotes while
Ashtin Hall produced nine kills and 10 digs. Setter
Sara Hoffman had a match-high 43 assists. Freshman middle blocker Samantha Middleborn had six block assists for CSUSB.
After being dominated in the third set by the Tritons, the Coyotes were unable to get closer than one point to the Tritons in the fourth set, trailing 17-16 at one point, but eventually lost by five.
In the deciding fifth set, CSUSB went up 2-0, but UCSD, inspired by the partisan crowd, took a 9-6 lead only to have the Coyotes rally to get within one at 10-9 and again one at 12-11. However, a kill by Schmidt and a block of a Granados attack made it 14-12 and after a bad serve the Tritons closed out the match on Bailey's kill shot.
