Granados is national player of week

MVP performance helps Coyotes move up to No. 1 in national poll

Jessica Granados (13) celebrates win over Concordia-St. Paul with teammates, left to right, Ashtin Hall, Sara Rice, Meghan Haas and Kelcie Tolan.
Senior all-American Jessica Granados demonstrated her all-America credentials in such a positive manner this past weekend that she was named today as the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Assn. NCAA Division II player of the week.
Her selection capped a perfect weekend for the Coyotes, who leaped from No. 4 in the nation to No. 1 in the nation in the first official CBS College Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Assn. poll of the 2008 season.
Granados was the MVP of the 2008 Coyote Volleyball Classic at Cal State San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena as her team went 3-0, defeating previously No. 1-ranked Concordia-St. Paul and No. 15 Lewis University as well as unranked Shippensburg.
She averaged 5.25 kills per game on .385 hitting to earn the national player of the week honor for the second time in her four-year career at CSUSB. The previous honor was presented on Oct. 8, 2007. Granados is the fourth Coyotes player to earn national player of the week honors.
In the 3-0 victory over 2007 NCAA Div. II champion Concordia-St. Paul, Granados posted a match-high 23 kills in 37 attacks with just five errors for .486 hitting and contributed one assist, seven digs and three block assists.
She played sparingly in a 3-0 CSUSB win over Shippensburg and finished the tournament with a match-high 17 kills on .364 hitting with one service ace, four digs and one block assist in a 3-0 victory over 15th-ranked Lewis University.
The coaches of the participating teams voted her the tournament's most valuable player.
Granados, a former Beaumont High School star, had a breakout year in 2007, averaging 4.72 kills per game on 2.94 hitting, with a team-high 54 service aces, 2.37 digs per game and 62 total blocks. She was the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. player of the year and the AVCA Pacific Region player of the year as well as a first-team AVCA all-American.
Since Granados became a starter in her sophomore season of 2006, the Coyotes have posted a 57-5 win-loss record including back-to-back CCAA championships.
CSUSB got 29 first-place votes from coaches in the national poll. Washburn (Kan.), the No. 2 team, got two first place votes and No. 5 Tampa got four first-place votes. Concordia-St. Paul dipped to No. 3 while Lewis University slipped from 15th to 25th spot.
