SAN BERNARDINO, Ca.. – Cal State San Bernardino exploded for four second-half goals Wednesday to defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 4-1, in the California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer opener for both teams.
The Coyotes are now 1-2 overall (1-0 in the CCAA) while the Broncos are 2-2 overall and (0-1 in the CCAA). CSUSB will host Cal State L.A. at 1:30 p.m. Friday in a CCAA match.
Sophomore forward
Obi Agwu scored twice and assisted on a third goal as the Coyotes erased a 1-0 halftime deficit en route to the victory. Agwu second goal of the match, a nifty bender into the upper net inside the far post was the match-deciding goal in the 63rd minute, giving CSUSB a 2-1 lead.
However, freshman
Julian Garcia found the Broncos net in the 82nd minute off a pass from Agwu to increase the margin to 3-1. Junior
Jeremiah Marquez finished the scoring with a 40-yard blast from inside the circle with just 11 seconds remaining in the contest.
Aaron Borja lifted Cal Poly Pomona into the lead just three minutes into the match with a nifty one-touch in the box off linked passes from Eric Gonzalez and Hector Quevedo. The Broncos yielded just two shots on goal from CSUSB in the first 45 minutes both saved by keeper Thomas Ryan.
Both of Agwu's goals in the second half were facing Ryan in the net. Brad Jones came on in the 69th minute to relieve Ryan and yielded the final two goals while saving two other shots.
Sophomore
Tyler Kahn saved four Broncos shots on goal after being stung by Borja's early try.
