The NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships Committee Sunday selected No. 1-ranked Concordia-St. Paul, the Central Region champion, as the host for the 2008 Division II National Championship, outbidding at least six other teams, including Cal State San Bernardino.
The Coyotes, who won the NCAA West Regional on Saturday night with a 3-0 sweep of Cal Poly Pomona, will take their 28-3 record to the tournament and face Atlantic Region winner California of Pennsylvania (40-1) in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. PT on Dec. 4.
The other three quarterfinal matches:
Grand Valley State Vs. Armstrong Atlantic.
Truman Vs. Nova Southeastern
Concordia-St. Paul Vs. New Haven.
If the Coyotes advance to the semifinal they would face the winner of Truman-Nova Southeastern in the semifinals on Dec. 5. The championship match is set for Saturday night.
A potential dream final would have the Coyotes, who handed Concordia-St. Paul -- the defending national champion -- their only 2008 loss (a 3-0 sweep in Coussoulis Arena in the first match of the 2008 season during the Coyote Classic Tournament) facing the host Golden Bears.
CSUSB swept past all three opponents in the West Regional, beating BYU-Hawaii, Chico State and the Broncos by 3-0 scores to win the regional for the third time in this decade. The other two wins came at UC San Diego in 2003 and 2004.
It was the ninth straight regional title match appearance for CSUSB, which had lost four finals at home (2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007) before putting to rest that negative stat.
