ARCATA -- Cal State San Bernardino earned a goal in the 32nd minute and the Coyotes defense made it stand up for a 1-0 CCAA conference men's soccer victory Sunday over host Humboldt State, the No. 7 team in the NCAA Division II West Region.
The unranked Coyotes improved to 6-7-1 on the season and 5-4-1 in the CCAA South Division while the Lumberjacks dipped to 7-4-4 overall and 2-4-3 in the CCAA.
It was the second shutout of the season for CSUSB and the first for sophomore goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha, who saved three shots on goal, the last coming in the 49th minute.
Meyer's third goal of the season came off an assist by sophomore
Albert Cabrera, giving Cabrera five assists on the season, second only to team leader
Obi Agwu. Agwu had five shots in the match and four required a save by 'Jacks keeper Ryan Drew, who finished with six saves.
Agwu had his last shot attempt stopped by Drew in the 72nd minute.
Jorge Aguirre,
Miguel Alatorre and Cabrera each had two shots in the match. Josh Suggs led the Lumberjacks with four shots, one saved by De La Rocha. Roland Demonbynes also had four shots but none required a save. Lyle Mink and Jordan Anderson also had shot attempts.
CSUSB outshot the 'Jacks 14-13 but fell victim to Humboldt's offside trap which caused the Coyotes to be called for offsides five times. There were 35 fouls in the match, 21 by HSU.
The victory salvaged the weekend for the Coyotes, who were pummeled 5-0 by Sonoma State on Friday in Rohnert Park.
