UC San Diego's Tom Caplan capitalized on a deflected pass off the foot of teammate Jonathan Sawyer and booted it into the goal in the second minute of overtime Friday to lift the Tritons to a 2-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener for both teams improved the Tritons to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA while the Coyotes dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Jahmel McDermott just outside the 18-yard line and then played solid defense until the closing minutes of regulation.
The Tritons, staring defeat in the face, got the equalizer in the 87th minute when Shane Micheil delivered a header into the upper V of the Coyotes goal off a crossing pass from Tony Choi to send the match into overtime.
UCSD took 13 shots in the match to just eight for the Coyotes. Coyotes goalie Lucas Pepi made four saves while Tritons keeper Peter Akman intercepted crossing passes and scooped up errant through balls during the match but did not make a save.
Just 16 fouls were called in the match, 12 against the host Coyotes and three of them drew yellow cards for the Coyotes and one for the Tritons.
